Protecting Your Gums When Out In the Sun

Gums Anchorage Dental Associates AK 99503-2838You might not realize that when you're out in the sun, you need to protect your mouth. Sun damaged gums and teeth are an uncomfortable prospect, so it is important to take the right precautions.

How Likely Are Sunburned Teeth and Gums?

Your gums are incredibly sensitive and vulnerable to damage. However, sunburns are pretty unlikely. You'd have to sit out in the sun with your teeth and gums exposed for a long time for burns to occur, which just isn't realistic for many people.

However, if your gums are already sensitive due to gum disease and you are outside for too long, it is certainly possible to cause damage.

How Can You Keep Your Mouth Safe?

If you are concerned about the health of your mouth, teeth, lips, and gums, there are a few precautions you can take. First, always wear a lip balm with a high SPF, at least at a rating of 15.

Apply the lip balm about 30 minutes before you go outside, and reapply at least once every two hours. Avoid glosses that might attract the sun to your lips, and if you want to wear lip color, choose matte products instead.

You also need to be concerned about your gums, lips, and teeth if you are currently whitening. This is especially if you are using UV technology for bleaching, as you'll need to stay out of the sun for a while.

You may suffer from additional sensitivity if your mouth is exposed to the powerful UV rays of the sun.
Another good way to protect your mouth while outdoors is to drink water frequently.

This will help the tissues of your mouth to stay hydrated. Dehydration will increase your risk of burning your mouth when outdoors.
