How to Brush
The ADA recommends that you brush your teeth at least twice a day. When you brush, you should do so for at least two full minutes every time. During this time, you should be sure to brush all surfaces of your teeth, including the fronts, backs, and the chewing surfaces. When you brush, use gentle back and forth motions on your teeth. Avoid brushing too hard, as this can cause gum irritation and recession, as well as wear away protective tooth enamel.
What Type of Toothbrush and Toothpaste Should I Use?
Many patients wonder what type of toothbrush and toothpaste they should use. It can be overwhelming with all of the options available in the oral care aisle of the store. If you opt for a standard toothbrush, choose one that has soft bristles. You can also choose an electric toothbrush. Electric toothbrushes can help to more effectively clean the surfaces of your teeth, offering more rotations than you can achieve manually. A standard toothbrush or the head of an electric toothbrush should be changed every three months, or when you notice the bristles beginning to fray.
As for toothpaste, look for one that has the ADA seal of approval. Choose a flavor that is appealing to you. A fluoridated toothpaste can be exceptionally helpful in preventing the development of tooth decay and cavities. You can also choose toothpaste specifically formulated to help with tooth sensitivity or to help whiten your teeth.
Flossing is recommended at least once a day. Standard floss is often recommended, but floss picks can be used if you have trouble with manual dexterity. With standard floss, take about 18 inches and wrap the floss around your middle fingers, leaving approximately one to two inches exposed. Gently work the floss between your teeth and scrape up and down the sides of each tooth. Use a new section of floss for each space. Do not forget to floss behind your very back teeth as well.
Do I Need to Use Mouthwash?
