Same Day Crowns Vs. Traditional Crowns

Your teeth are the strongest substance in your body. Despite their strength, however, they can still be subject to damage or decay. When these issues arise, your teeth are at risk for further damage or painful infections. A crown is a common treatment used to restore damaged teeth, providing the affected tooth with protection and restoring its strength so that it can function normally. While crowns traditionally take two appointments to place, crowns can also be placed in a single appointment. Anchorage Dental Associates can help.

What is a Crown?

When your teeth are damaged, treatment is needed immediately. A crown is a dental restoration designed to treat damaged or decayed teeth. It is a cap like restoration resembling the crown of a natural tooth in shape. The crown encases the entire visible surface of a damaged tooth, providing it with protection against further damage and infections. It also helps to restore strength to the tooth, allowing it to function normally again.

The Traditional Crown Procedure

The traditional crown procedure requires two separate appointments, During the first appointment, the tooth is prepared, a process that is done under a local anesthetic. Preparing the tooth involves removing a portion of the tooth enamel, reducing it in size so that your crown can fit naturally, and comfortably in with the rest of your teeth. After the tooth is prepared, an impression is taken. The impression is sent off to a dental lab, where it is used to design and create your custom crown. This process can take about two weeks to complete. A temporary crown is placed, which protects until your crown is finished. A second appointment occurs when the crown is ready. Your crown is checked for a comfortable fit and a natural bite. If no adjustments are needed, the crown is bonded securely into place on your tooth.

Same Day Crowns

We can provide you with a dental crown in a single appointment with same day crowns. A same day crown eliminates the need for a second appointment and a temporary crown. The process begins much like the traditional crown process. After administering a local anesthetic, the damaged tooth is prepared, reducing the tooth in size. After the tooth is prepared, a digital impression of the mouth is taken. This impression is shown in 3D on a computer monitor. Using specialized software, we can custom design your crown. We can also input color information to ensure that your crown blends in perfectly with your surrounding teeth.

After the crown has been designed, the information is sent to an in-house milling unit. We place a block of ceramic inside the machine, and the machine cuts out, or mills, your custom crown. Once it has been milled, we can finish it so that it perfectly resembles your natural teeth. After it is created, we are then able to check it for fit and a natural bite. If adjustments are needed, they can be completed quickly, and without the need for additional waiting. Once the crown is perfect, we are then able to bond it into place.

A crown is an effective treatment used to treat damaged or decayed teeth, protecting the affected teeth from further harm and restoring their strength.
